A dedicated day focusing on the FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership took center stage during the Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Punta del Este, Uruguay. This event marked a major step in driving collaboration for sustainable livestock practices in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Driving regional collaboration

The day dedicated to the FAO LEAP Partnership began with a Steering Committee meeting, where participants defined the partnership’s strategic direction and emphasized innovative approaches to environmental stewardship in the livestock sector. This session transitioned into the first-ever FAO LEAP Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, which brought together stakeholders from the region and beyond to foster dynamic discussions. The FAO LEAP Secretariat worked closely with participants from the Food Systems Integrated Programme (FSIP) to explore new opportunities for collaboration, actionable strategies, and projects tailored to the region’s unique needs.

About the Regional Conference

The FAO LEAP event built to the broader goals of the Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Uruguay’s Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries, and the Uruguayan National Meat Institute (INAC). The event provided a platform for collaboration between public and private sector representatives from across Latin America and beyond. Together, these stakeholders created a shared vision for sustainable livestock development in the region and set the stage for upcoming global discussions on livestock sustainability.

Key outcomes

By uniting public and private stakeholders, the FAO LEAP-focused day and the regional conference actively promoted environmental responsibility and sustainable growth in Latin America and the Caribbean. The decisions and strategies emerging from these events pave the way for future regional and global efforts to transform the livestock sector sustainably.
